Chemistry

Christo Christov, PhD

Christo Christov joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Chemistry as an associate professor. He earned his PhD in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Prior to coming to Tech, Christov worked as an associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom. He has been published in multiple journals and has guest edited several books. He is a member of both the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Computer Science

Bo Chen, PhD

Bo Chen joins Tech’s Department of Computer Science as an assistant professor. Chen earned his PhD in Computer Science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Prior to coming to Tech, Chen worked as a research assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Memphis. He has been published in several journals and books. He is a recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Paper Award in 2013 for his research in cloud computing security.

James Walker, PhD

James Walker joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Computer Science as a lecturer. Walker graduated this spring from Tech with a PhD in Computer Science.

His PhD dissertation was on virtual reality, and he developed a virtual reality window and a software system to help users type on keyboards while wearing head-mounted displays.

Jianhui Yue, PhD

Jianhui Yue joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Computer Science as an assistant professor. Yue earned his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Maine, where he also received the Outstanding Research Assistant Award.

Yue worked as a visiting assistant professor of computer science and software engineering at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, prior to coming to Tech. He has published in several journals, both in English and Chinese, and holds one patent.

Pavlis Honors College

Laura Fiss, PhD

Laura Fiss joins Michigan Tech’s Pavlis Honors College as a research assistant professor. Fiss earned her PhD in English with a minor in Victorian studies from Indiana University.

Fiss was previously an instructor in humanities at Tech. She has been published in multiple journals and authored numerous conference papers. She is a Community Advisory Board member for the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts, and a member of the Modern Language Association.

Humanities

Oren Abeles, PhD

Oren Abeles joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Humanities as an assistant professor. He earned his PhD in English from the University of North Carolina in 2017.

 Abeles has multiple publications and awards, including the McLaurin Dissertation Fellowship in 2016.

Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology

William Cooke, PhD

William Cooke joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology as a professor with tenure. He came to Tech from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he was professor and chair of the Department of Kinesiology, Health and Nutrition. He was previously an associate professor in biomedical engineering at Michigan Tech. He received his PhD in Kinesiology/Exercise Physiology at Texas A&M University.

Cooke has experience in research and teaching. He has multiple publications and awards, including being inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Researchers in 2015.

Mathematical Sciences

Xiao Zhang, PhD

Xiao Zhang joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Mathematical Sciences as an assistant professor. She received her PhD in Biostatistics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2004.

Before joining Tech, Zhang worked as a research scientist and statistical consultant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She has experience in teaching and research, as well as multiple publications and awards. Zhang is also a member of the American Statistical Association.

Social Sciences

Angie Carter, PhD

Angie Carter joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Social Sciences as an assistant professor. Carter earned her PhD in Sociology and Sustainable Agriculture from Iowa State University.

She has worked as a teaching fellow at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. She received the Iowa State University Research Excellence Award and has published several papers and made presentations on agriculture. She also has served as a project manager on a three-year data collection for an EPA Region 7 Wetland Development Grant project.

Kelly Ontl, PhD

Kelly Ontl joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Social Sciences as a visiting assistant professor. Ontl earned her PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Iowa State University in 2017. She was previously an instructor in social sciences at Michigan Tech.

Ontl worked as the director of Falémé Chimpanzee Conservation Project in Kharakhena, Senegal, an organization she founded. She has been published in multiple journals. Her work has received media coverage by National Geographic, the New York Times, Smithsonian.com and the BBC. She is also a member of the International Society of Primatologists and the Society for Conservation Biology.

Laura Rouleau, PhD

Laura Rouleau joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Social Sciences as a visiting assistant professor. Rouleau earned her PhD in History of American Civilization from the University of Delaware.

She was previously an instructor in social sciences and visual and performing arts at Tech. She has been published and has given multiple presentations. She also received the Lois F. McNeil Fellowship.

Visual and Performing Arts

Libby Meyer, DMA

Libby Meyer joins Michigan Tech’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) as a lecturer. Meyer earned her Doctorate in Musical Arts from Northwestern University.

She was previously an instructor and community string program director in VPA, where she created the music composition minor supporting sound design and audio production majors. She has also taught music courses and developed new courses. She was selected to be one of 20 participants in the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop in Memory of Buddy Baker at the New York University School of Performing Arts. She has composed multiple pieces.
